Unremarkable EMS outcomes are best

You already identified potential EMS providers. Now the EMS provider works for you. Its not uncommon for him to source 2,000 different components to make 500 PCB assemblies. As your OEM-EMS relationship gets underway, transitioning your program into the hands of your EMS provider is the de-coupling point for the OEM’s active materials management

You made sure the provider was given recent specs for box build assembly (old specs are the most common reason for derailing your RFP and your RFQ phase), EMS provider due diligence is behind you (you were sure to see each provider’s ‘bone pile’ during EMS factory tours), and you combed through your final revision of your EMS hardware manufacturing contract weeks ago.

Now, your internal outsourcing management activity is coming to life (know that providers use savvy EMS program management to drive profits) and, both sides know what to do when manufacturing falls apart.

Proper alignment
EMS internal planning / procurement and program management staffing is best prepared when your EMS partner chooses his functional team members for your OEM program based on each person’s expertise matching your product program needs.

Some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • If your OEM product contains a high number of components, the EMS planner assigned to your OEM program should have purchasing experience.
  • If your product requires fair amounts of sheet metal, light pipes/plastics, and other enclosures your EMS should staff his team with buyers that have planning expertise.
  • For OEM products with high-cost ASICS its best if your EMS partner has separate planners and separate buyers. Both functional team reps should attend defect reduction team meetings hosted weekly by your provider, with OEM functional counterparts also attending.
