New product introduction (NPI) is the process of introducing a new product to the market. This process includes product design, development, testing and validation, and may also include market research, prototyping, and pilot production. The NPI process is focused on ensuring the product is technically feasible, can be manufactured at a reasonable cost, and meets the needs and requirements of the target market.

New product launch (NPL) is the process of bringing the product to market and making it available for purchase by customers. This process includes commercialization of the product, including marketing, sales, and distribution. The NPL process is focused on creating demand for the product, building brand awareness, and generating sales.

After all of the effort hardware startups and global enterprise OEMs invest in managing the RFQ and quote process with their EMS manufacturing partners, companies want to make sure their new product (pilot) build programs launch as planned for product manufacturing, quality and test. To do this, OEM programs follow an expected pathway to meet OEM product requirements.  Read: Electronics hardware startup strategy for product design and manufacturing

In summary, NPI is focused on product development and manufacturing, while NPL is focused on introducing the product to the market and creating demand for it. NPI comes before NPL, and NPL is the final step in the product development process. For more on this, read: OEM hardware pilot build new product launch goals and objectives.

What is an electronics OEM company?

The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is the brand owner, the company whose logo displays on the final product. Think: Apple, Sony, Ford, Cisco, Dell, Samsung, Lenovo, Microsoft … For example, Apple’s iPhone has the Apple logo clearly visible to users. Apple is the OEM.

Apple designs its products, but Apple outsources the majority of iPhone manufacturing production to contract electronics solutions providers – both EMS and ODM. Apple does this to leverage cost-to-scale.

Read our article, The differences between OEM companies and CM, CEM, EMS, ODM and JDM electronics providers for more information. And if you are unable to find answers to your questions please contact us and we will respond to you promptly.
