Talking with an industry executive this week, differences and similarities between offerings by SAP and Oracle when it comes to manufacturing are not too surprising. SAP and Oracle both propose and sell-in a solution which is based on 1 of many SKU’s (acquired products) which they own or have investment in. Both companies then cobble together (frankenware) a single working solution.
SAP and Oracle are also the only non-cloud-stacks with the breadth of capabilities/features that can accommodate complex business eco-systems which is especially true when looking wanting to address contract electronics providers serving the non-tradition markets like industrial electronics, automotive, avionics….
Both get entrenched from different positions. Oracle through financial packages, databases and infrastructure. SAP through shop floor logistics, materials handling (manufacturing). Both work there way toward the middle and build bespoke solutions at a very high cost $ and time.
Seems the main difference between the two: SAP is good at promoting their specific solutions and convincing electronics OEM and EMS/ODM companies their product meets customer needs. Whereas Oracle is more tuned into finding out your manufacturing needs than using its frankenware to meet those requirements. Oracle is able to do this because of a large team of backend and systems developers providing depth and scope.
A wider comparison brings in NetSuite (now Oracle) with SAP, Oracle.
