Semiconductors, printed circuit boards, computers raise Malaysian manufacturing

First three months of year shows 24% growth in sales value of manufacturing sector. Average sales value per employee in March was 26% higher vs. same month last year. Total number of employees engaged in manufacturing sector in March 2010 rose 1.1%.

Malaysia’s manufacturing sales continued to record double digit growth with a year-on-year increase of 27.7% or RM10.1billion in March 2010 to reach RM46.6 billion from RM36.5 billion in the same month last year, according to the latest release from the Department of Statistics (DOS).

The sales value in February 2010 was a revised 16.8% year-on-year to post RM40.1 billion. Month-on-month, the sales value in March also recorded an increase of 16.0% or RM6.4 billion.

The year-on-year expansion was mainly driven by significant increases in five major manufacturing industries – refined petroleum products (36.0%), other basic industrial chemicals except fertilizers and nitrogen compounds (75.3%); television and radio receivers, sound or video recording or reproducing apparatus, and associated goods (47.8%); motor vehicles (55.5%) and electronic valves and tubes and printed circuit boards (35.4%).

The 16.0% month-on-month increase in the sales value in March 2010 was mainly attributed to increases in five major industries- refined petroleum products (32.9%), electronic valves and tubes and printed circuit boards (28.7%); semiconductor devices (9.8%); computer and computer peripherals (10.4%) and television and radio receivers, sound and video recording or reproducing apparatus, and associated goods (14.6%).

For the first three months of the year, the sales value of the manufacturing sector also recorded a strong growth of 24.5% or RM25.6 billion to post RM130.1 billion.

The total number of employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in March 2010 rose 1.1% or 10,644 persons to 962,833 persons, compared with the previous month.

The total employees in February 2010 recorded a revised decline of 1.7% year-on-year to 952,189 workers.

However, compared with the corresponding month last year, the total workers employed in the manufacturing sector in March 2010 also increased by 8,407 persons or 0.9%.

For the first quarter of the year, the number of workers employed in the manufacturing sector also increased by 0.9% or 8,407 to 962,833 persons.

Productivity or average sales value per employee in March 2010 was higher by 26.6% to reach RM48,388 compared with the same month last year.

Month-on-month, the productivity recorded an increase of 14.8%. Productivity in February 2010 was a revised increase of 18.8% year-on-year to register RM42,163.

Meanwhile, the productivity in the manufacturing sector for the January-March period was higher by 23.4% to register RM135,127.
